Microsoft in 1994

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘄𝗲𝗯 𝗶𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘁’𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗮𝗻𝗰𝘆.

I got stuck in the rabbit hole that is the Web Design Museum and was blown away by the Microsoft homepage from 1994. We are always so impatient with the progress of things, but it’s fascinating to look back at the internet in 1994, +/- 33 million were online in 1994 (compared to 4.66 billion today). It was all about email, news and a bit of file sharing.

Look at the 𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗼𝗳𝘁 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗽𝗮𝗴𝗲:
– goofy welcome header 🙂
-” World wide web server”
– no buttons, no navigation, just a selection of random text links
– wild cd-rom like image (I think that’s what it’s supposed to be?)
– the most prominent call-to-action is “Send us your feedback”

That’s 29 years ago and we’re currently up to 59.5% of the world’s population online. That’s a couple of hundred million more new people coming online in the next few years and a whole lot of new developments still to come.

I know my techno-optimism and excitement in the face of our impending AI-pocalypse could be tiring 😋 . Looking at how far we’ve come in a relatively short time makes me excited about the next 29 years.
